Situated at Mount Nelson in a Tasmanian bushland setting rich in bio-diversity, and with a spectacular view of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, the Sustainability Learning Centre (SLC) is a contemporary learning facility where inspiring architecture integrates exemplary environmentally sustainable design (ESD) throughout. It accommodates multiple user needs and spatial requirements with on-site programs delivered by Tasmania’s Department of Education and Greening Australia. High volumes, natural lighting and a strong visual and physical connection to the exterior characterise the building interior and its flexible learning spaces.
The centre achieved 6 star Green Star As Built Certification in 2017. It is a ‘hands on’ educational tool demonstrating sustainability principals and incorporating the latest smart building technology to provide the community and schools with information about renewable energy and sustainable practices. Built from extensive recycled materials, the building demonstrates cooling using night sky temperatures, and the almost total eradication of the use of concrete, amongst other ground breaking but simple technologies utilised in its construction.
