The annual Australian Institute of Architects Awards is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase new work that we believe is worthy of acclaim. Judging of the 2025 Tasmanian Chapter Awards submissions is now well underway and this year Morrison & Breytenbach Architects is pleased to have entered two projects into this highly competitive process.
Our first submission, the new Glenorchy Ambulance Station, is a custom-designed emergency services facility for Ambulance Tasmania (AT) in the northern part of Greater Hobart. It garages up to 18 ambulances and delivers vastly improved AT facilities including a high-quality workplace environment for paramedics.
The facility comprises distinctive activity zones:
- The administrative / training / paramedic wing includes an offices and training zone and a 24 hour pre- and post-incident stand down zone.
- The operational and cleaning zones manage incident mobilisation as well as personnel and ambulance return and reintegration procedures.
- The ambulance garage zone is where vehicles are made ready for the next deployment.
The Station’s strong architectural form is prominent from the Brooker Highway. Passive solar principles inform good orientation and effective sun control for thermal comfort. The design balances optimal response time with safety and functionality, and careful planning integrates lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic.
