Located on the northern end of UTAS Newnham Campus the residence consists of 180 self-contained National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) apartments, each with a fully appointed kitchenette, open bedroom / study area and private bathroom. The residence buildings form a series of greened interlinking courtyards, the design consciously supporting development of a sense of community and a comfortable scale to promote a sense of belonging and social interaction amongst residents. Common rooms on every level promote opportunities for interpersonal interaction and learning in the globalised information age. A circulation route through the courtyards gives easy pedestrian and cyclist access to the campus while design according to Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles promotes occupants’ safety. Environmentally sustainable design (ESD) principles address solar orientation, user comfort, a healthy environment, energy and resource efficiencies, and lifecycle cost savings.
