It is not unusual for a Morrison & Breytenbach Architects team to construct a little cardboard scale model only to rip off its roof, cut down or rebuild walls and modify its openings during the course of the development of a design. Even after all these years in practice we find that there is a time during our design process when we benefit from design exploration through rudimentary model building.

The school’s message of appreciation was given to us at the official launch of the recently completed upgrade and development of Glenorchy Primary School from 2015–2017.

Nicknamed “Tiger House” in the office because of our client’s love of the thylacine, the building has a distinctive character as a result of the beautiful sheened greys of its “tiger stripe” external cladding made from recycled Tas Oak fence palings. A Tasmanian feel continues internally through the use of Tasmanian Oak veneer ceilings and joinery, and with below counter use of recycled fencing palings in the kitchen referencing the exterior cladding that is readily seen from the interior.

We are pleased to announce Director Yvette Breytenbach has stepped into the role of President of the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects – a two year voluntary term. She is passionate about collaboration between all sectors of our community to enhance the qualities of Tasmania that we hold dear and to continue building a vibrant and mutually beneficial environment and sustainable economy. She encourages Tasmanians to view engaging an architect as a value-for-money investment to achieve cost-effective, sustainable buildings and urban centres, which will contribute to the long-term growth of our economy, enrich our culture and support our communities.

Director Yvette Breytenbach recently travelled to South Africa where a highlight was a personal tour with Professor Barry Dwolatsky of the new Joburg Centre for Software Engineering, at the heart of the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct. This brainchild of Professor Dwolatsky has the vision of driving urban renewal in Braamfontein in addition to its mission to support innovation, skills acquisition and youth entrepreneurial ventures. The premises are housed in a number of recycled buildings acquired by Wits University. A major tenant is IBM Research Lab Africa and a highlight was meeting Watson!
